Its the time of the year again when we all gear up in preparation for the annual Dance exams! Many parents ask me “why exams” So in today’s blog I am going to try and express my thoughts about exam.
Firstly, the exams set a target for each student to achieve within a set time frame. This ensures that students work towards learning in a continuous manner aiming to achieve a desired result. The exams are based on a structured curriculum. This lets each student learn every aspect of kathak based on their individual level. Having a curriculum instills discipline in learning as well as teaching. It is also important for teachers as it keeps us on track with our material. Some students or parents may find it challenging, while some may shy away from, it is sometimes essential to give them the opportunity to test. the sense of achievement boosts confidence, motivates to learn further and gives the student a direction to lead their training towards completion.
From my personal experience, I have benefited from exams in many ways. It made me more committed and focused towards learning the art form, understanding the intricacies of the art, the mathematics of it, the terminology, different taals , basic knowledge about instruments, vocals, recitation, as well as the History of kathak. I also firmly believe that this disciplined training has helped me not just in performing, but also made me a better teacher. I have the confidence and the foundation to explain the students every concept in depth.
Next week, I will talk more about what to expect and what is expected in an exam!
Till then , Keep Dancing!
